Christmas Chopping!

After work today I went to finish my Christmas shopping. I needed to get something for my mum. What do you buy for the woman who has everything? The answer is....... A chopping board, apparently. "What size?" I asked her last night on the phone.
"Just like my melamine one" she replied.
"Wooden?"
"Oh no, I don't like those ones, I want another melamine one!"
Well this is the twenty first century, I'm not sure you can still get melamine, I wanted to retort but kept my mouth firmly shut!
So, off I went to John Lewis (because it's not far to go), to see if melamine is still 'in'! Well what do you think??
I did ask and no one seemed to know what I was talking about -although that is quite normal right now! So I ended up with something else that looked fairly durable. I wonder if she'll like it?

Thanks to everyone who commented below. You will have to keep guessing I'm afraid! Suffice to say that I am still reeling slightly. The evidence is all around me! I have just gone out to the kitchen because I could smell a slight burning and realised I had put some leeks on to slowly saute awhile ago, oops! On the way out of the kitchen I realised I was carrying a coldish cup of tea in one hand, and a glass of wine in the other!! Things in Suburbia are still a bit 'tilted'.

  2. I would have said that melamine is now out! I'm afraid that sometimes I don't mince my words!
We will just be left wondering about yesterday then. Sorry if you had a shock of some kind & hope things will resolve at some point.

  5. well I have the best chopping board ever, although perhaps your Mum would not appreciate it.

It is not melamine, it is glass, and it has Elvis's face made up with vegetables, makes me laff out loud everytime I chop an onion!

However my sainted Ma In Law was not impressed, firstly she asked who exactly the face on the board was, then she said "whatever will they think of next".

Because she says this about everything my interest in the whole subject had slightly skewed.

I could write a book about her.

And make money. From the tales, but sadly love my hubby too much to make money out of his mother.

    Even though..............!

  7. I'm sure you can still get melamine ones. More hygienic than wood I am thinking. All the blood and stuff gets ground into wood.

  8. I hope your Mum is pleased with her chopping board, I hope your strange days don't last.

  9. Hmmm...melamine? Look for it in the baby formula aisle...

And I always walk around with a cup of tea in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. Thought it was normal behavior. It's not? Oh, dear.

  10. Just arrived back home tonight, Suburbia, and am catching up. I was going to comment that the plexiglass (I think that's what it's called) cutting boards are great, but what I really want to know is if your world is still turning?? You've certainly intrigued us all; at least it sounds as though it was a happy experience:)

  11. Dear tilted of Suburbia,

Great post title - gotta love a pun!

What is Melanine? I thought that was the stuff they made floors and surfaces from back in the 70s? Glass is the way forward and complies with all sorts of exciting laws from the patronising government!

Hope you enjoy your tilt today too..

  12. Oh don't talk to me about John Lewis!

You should get your mum some Russian Dolls like I did mine from Next (£ 10).

TK Maxx has great kitchen stuff if that helps. xxx

  13. I know how your mother feels. It's so annoying when your favourite things go out of fashion. I was thwarted in my search for a melamine chopping board and bought something else pretty, but plasticy. It's a bit slippy, though, so not entirely successful. I don't like wooden ones, because, like liz, I think they are too absorbent.

Glass ones make me nervous, because I keep expecting them to break, even though I know that they are safe.

I hope that your mother likes the one you have chosen.

I don't want to know what happened to make your world tilt on its axis, anyway! See! Ha!

Do, really. Tell us! Go on! ;0)

  14. Melanine - I thought that was the stuff in your brain that helped you sleep... so confusing, all these things called nearly the same.
Wonder how your world is today... still wandering around with cold tea and warm wine??!

  16. Your mum is easy to please as far as Christmas presents are concerned if she only wants a chopping board.

  17. Akelamalu, yes I guess so but it was a VERY EXPENSIVE chopping board!

    Hi Blogthatmama, ;)

Ladybird, melamine is the stuff they used to make worktops with in the 70's, and yes, spilling a bit too!

Mean mom, Look in your in tray!

Thanks Jen, just read your views on JL, made me lol!

BS5, The tilt was very enjoyable, thank you for asking :)

Rose, I've been meaning to e mail you. Hope you had a great trip. The world here is, indeed, still turning at a most alarming rate!

Hey Dori, normal for us then!

    Starnitesky, it is not unpleasant!

Liz, only in Wales apparently ;)

    Jo, no hints sorry!!

That's funny Letty, you'll just have to stick to the MIL jokes!
