Fat Larry

Last night Tall Girl and I had a long chat before bed. We were both tired and just lazed around chatting about nothing in particular. I love to hear her chatter. It is at the end of the day when she is most likely to 'let go', drop her guard, and issue forth on all sorts of topics. I have only just realised this fact. Perhaps when she is sleepy she feels more relaxed, or perhaps it's a going to bed delaying tactic?

I listened to her talk about school and friends, the fact that her e mail's wasn't working for a while and how a boy mailed her a few weeks ago. I asked her if she mailed him back. I have heard his name before. There was a girl too. She hadn't responded to either. We talked about making friends. How, sometimes, you just need to say 'Hi'. We talked about how it is nice to have friends that are boys as well as girls in your social circle.

In her hand was her soft toy that she still takes to bed with her, despite being 12 years old. It is a lamb, his name is Fat Larry, though he's not that fat anymore. She can't sleep unless he is with her. It's a funny thing.

All of a sudden Larry, after 12 years, found his voice! He has a funny sort of accent but, if you listen very carefully, you can get the gist of what he is saying.

As we talked about friendship, I mentioned that I have lots of contacts on line now that I consider to be friends. She looked at me straight in the eye and Larry said "Now, you really do need friends in the real world mummy, not just virtual ones!"

I consider myself told!

  1. yes - my daughter refers to them as ... "Your dodgy mates off the internet"... Also you feel instantly hypocritical when you lecture them about safety on the internet etc...

BTW - didn't Fat Larry have a band in the 80s?

  2. Fat Larry the WISE.

But, it's still a blessing to have a worldwide circle of friends.

It's one of the wonders of being able to connect with so many; there are people here who I absolutely adore and whom I'd never have had a chance to meet and get to know if I hadn't jumped out into the web.

Still, Larry has a point. There's nothing like holding a friends hand or getting a real hug.

  4. Good that you can have those regular heart-to-hearts with her, that she doesn't keep her distance like some girls.

Excellent that Fat Larry brushes his teeth regularly, a lamb with rotten choppers wouldn't be much fun.

Of course I shouldn't really be commenting, I'm only a virtual friend....

  8. At this stage in my life I don't have TIME for my real-life friends. Like most else, they've had to take a back burner to try to keep up with my everyday responsibilities. I treasure my online friends...they've taken the place of the many pen pals I had all the way up until I bought a computer and discovered the joys of the internet. If it wasn't for these "dodgy cyber friends" I dunno what I'd do!

  9. I sometimes wonder who are the adults and who are the children?

I hope I have those lovely conversations with my daughter when she's older. Well, apart from criticising my blogging habit!

  12. Fat Larry is a wise one indeed. My daughter makes fun of my blogging friends, but she spends time on Facebook, so I don't think she has room to talk. Friends you can see in person are certainly important, but cyberfriends are wonderful--I can talk to them any time I want, and I don't have to get dressed up or drive anywhere to meet them:)

  18. Oh teenagers, they're always full of OR choices. What about AND. Real world friends AND dodgey Internet chums too.

Plus of course, when chances come, they can always cross the great divide. Hulla and I are visiting my family at the start of July with our boys, and then visiting Brighton, and are very very looking forward to meeting up with Miss Tickle and SpiralSkies whilst we're in the Deep South!

  19. "Real world friends"... I've heard of this before... I should really look into that...

  20. You can have both! She sounds very wise, though x

  21. ah but what will Tall Girl say if you should actually "meet up" with one of your on line friends!

    That will confuse her!

I have now met up (and stayed for two weeks with my Aussie pals) with three blogging friends, and they are just as good pals in real life as on line.

    All friends are good!

trying valiantly to catch up now!

Letty x oh sorry I am signed in as my dog, but you know who I am!
