Sneaky Mum!

It was my day off today. There are so many things that I should be sorting out here, but none of it really appealed, so I took a trip up to Mums for the day.

I thought you might enjoy this little snippet of conversation from our day, we are in the kitchen and Mum is rummaging through the wine rack:

"Here you are, take this for your Girls Night in on Friday" she says, brandishing a bottle of red wine in my direction.

"Thank you" I say "But you really don't have to do that."

"It's Dads" She says

"Well, he doesn't have to then"

Then she says in a stage whisper "Don't tell him"

"You can't do that!" I exclaim

"Yes I can! Anyway, he hides the good stuff" (I'm not sure how to take this)

"What, like a squirrel?!" Oh my goodness, what is the world coming to?

"Yes"

"Who from? You don't drink it"

"He hides it so I don't give it away....

Well that works then!
I am starting to wonder if she is giving it to me just to get rid of it and stop him drinking it.I walk off into another room smiling as she shouts from the kitchen

"There's 3 in the airing cupboard!"

"Three what?" I shout back and then I realise....... he's not hiding them very well then!!!

PS As we head off for a sedate dog walk she thrusts the bottle into my hand again.
"Better put it in your car now love, so you don't forget it"
She's not going to tell him she's given it to me, is she?!

  1. Oh wonderful! Mike's dad had lots of whisky for his birthday. (He's 83 and doesn't want anything else!) and he hides the best ones upstairs! I'm surprised mum-in-law hasn't started giving those away!

  2. Surely he must notice the bottles disappearing and ask her about them? Or does he forget where he's put them? Anyway, if I were you, I'd grab any free wine and no questions asked....

  3. That is so funny.
Don't fancy wine being kept in the airing cupboard though.

  4. Oh that's lovely. I gave a bottle of red wine to the bin-men one xmas. Turns out it was a dead pricey one the hubs had got for xmas day! Perhaps your dad is wise to hide it!

  5. Nick, I suspect when he visits the wine rack he is often a little the worse for wear, therefore assumes he may have drunk it himself!!

  6. Betcha any money your dad knows what is going on all too well and deliberately leaves "easy finds" around to satisfy your mum while keeping quality plonk in hiding places so ingenious MI5 are queuing up to borrow them.

  7. Top Mrs. Suburbia action - I like that she thought you might forget the wine.

  9. BS5, She wasn't worried I'd forget it she just wanted me to hide the incriminating evidence!

Probably Dotterel, do you want her address?!!

  11. That's funnier, but if you were a sneaky daughter and whisperingly gave it back to your Dad, in a schhhhhhh fashion, so it reappeared in the airing cupboard and completed the circle - now that would be BBC Sitcom level.

  12. Bum! I wish I'd thought of that Bobo!

  13. Too funny, Suburbia:) But doesn't he miss them eventually? We don't have airing cupboards here, but they are to hang clothes in, aren't they? I would think he'd want to find a better hiding place than that:) Of course, if I were a secret drinker, I could hide bottles in the laundry hamper and Hubby would never find them!

  14. oh just take it! A day without wine is like a day without sunshine!

Your Mum is just giving you some sunshine, never mind where it came from!

    Cheers!

I love your "Mum" tales! She sounds very much like my departed but much loved Ma!

Letty ! ;0D ps thank you so much for your lovely comments on mine! They encourage me to keep blogging when I lose the impetus sometimes, kinda wonder if I am right to keep on with it etc..........

thanks! I will raise a glass to you! Forbidden wine tastes the best you know!!

  15. oh forgot to add

my long departed Father In Law used to hide wine upstairs in his cottage under the floorboards.........

whenever we visited, he would "grudgingly" go up there with a hammer and heave up the floor boards to reveal some horrible wine.....

which he insisted, on bringing just one bottle down from the said floorboards, was "drinking wine" not to be sullied with food!

Whereupon we would get a wee taste in the bottom of some funny old glass which had lingered in the cupboard too long and tasty musty.

Memories! After he died, the floor boards revealed no wine, so not sure who drunk it!

Hopefully whoever, didn't drink it with food!

    ha ha ha!

    Letty xxxxx

  16. Enjoy the wine! Whether it is cheap or vintage it is all alcoholic.

  19. I've missed the "Mum" stories! We hide the "good" stuff when the mother-in-law visits--not all that well, just put the cheap bottles in front and she stops at those. Of course, we have to keep replenishing the cheap row for the duration of the visit...

  20. Hello! HEre is a good rule of thumb, when someone offers you a free bottle of alcohol, take it. :)

  21. I think I love your Mum, she's funny. I like the way your Dad hides it so that she can't give it away. I'm sure that he's well aware of what is going on, I guess that he is just doing it as a game with your Mother. She enjoys giving them away, and so he supply's that pleasure for her. I think it's sweet.
