Tall Girls secret

"You've got a boy friend" Says Small Sprog to Tall Girl in a nah nah nan nah nah voice.

We were sitting in the car wondering if a trip to the park was a good idea, or if it would rain any minute. He had chosen this moment to tease his sister. She was a sitting duck!

"No I didn't"

"Yes you did!"

"No I didn't, I said I fancied someone" She said, giving in because she knew she couldn't bluff it, knowing he would embarrass her in front of me anyway.

"Whats his name then" I ask her, joining in the fun.

"Not Telling you"

"Well, what does he look like"

Silence. She is a very private person. I will never truly know her.

"What colour is his hair?" I laugh.

"Brown"

"His eyes"

"I don't know!"

"What do you mean, you don't know?!" I giggle, though I guess that comes later. "Is he in your year?" I continue, knowing I will get more information that way than if I ask if he's in her class.

"Yes"

"What's his name?"

"Not telling you" Ah! I had reached the end of what she was willing to tell me.

"Would I know him if you told me?"

"No"

"Does he fancy you?"I hazard

"How can you tell?" She looks at me in amazement

"Well, does he steal stuff from your pencil case and hit you with his ruler?"

"Yes"

"He does then"!

I loved being that age!!

  1. Oh to be the age again - eh? I'm not sure you know, it's hard as well isn't it.
Luckily my son isn't that interested yet but I expect I will have all of that soon.
And....little brothers and sisters, my daughter is constantly saying after every text son receives- Is that Your Girlfriend? She knows it winds him up. ;0)

  2. First fatuation. She hadn't figured out if she had a crush on him yet or not huh. You're right. That is such a fun age between being a kid and being a young adult. Lots of room for growth in that age.

    I love it.

I think I was just as secretive at that age. I would have been just as embarrassed if my sister and mother were probing me so relentlessly!

  4. Ah primitive flirting techniques... you know, I've never really moved on from them. I'm amazed I'm married really.

  5. Hello you! I see them in the park - teenagers, hitting each other, wrestling and generally winding each other up. I'm always telling No.1 that boys don't do that to girls they don't like. ;-) x

  6. Why do boys think that irritating us is the thing to do to get our attention? And it continues into adulthood, too!

  7. I was laughing out loud reading your post. I’ve had a very similar conversation with both of my daughters and your description of boy – meets – girl is spot on.

  9. Oh, to be this young and innocent again! This is just the beginning, Suburbia; another new phase in your life--I'm sure Tall Girl will have many more suitors. If only "hitting you with a ruler" was a good indication of whether a relationship would work:)

  10. Oh the innocence of youth...

My daugther's last fav has bitten the dust... he got glasses.

Hang I wear glasses, actually we all wear glasses accept her and she is the worst at seeing anything as you drive along etc...

  13. Very funny. I remember all that. All the time I was waiting for a boy to give me a nice bunch of flowers and if only I'd realised a smack on the head with a 6-inch ruler was just the same !!

  14. Awww, that is soooo sweet!!! (I remember being hit on the arm repeatedly by a boy at school who fancied me!! Did nothing to win my affections....I couldn't stand him!!)

  15. Charming.

My girls are a few years away from boy crushes. A small part of my brain is amused and delighted at the prospect. A much larger part wants to run screaming from the idea.

  17. Dear Suburbia,

I have just spent about two hours reading your blog after responding to your Mad Manic Mama's post. In hindsight, I feel I was a little unfeeling due to what I wrote! I apologize. I was unaware of all the challenges facing Tall Girl and I do really think she is suffering from stress, poor thing.
In all our troubles, I mentioned in the comment, at least our marriage survived, we only had each other to depend on really and although my husband suffers from depression (as I perceive to be one of the demons affecting your ex too, we have been lucky to muddle through and have a happy, passionate (!) relationship after 31 years together and 25 of marriage - it certainly has not all been smooth sailing and I can relate to a lot of what you wrote and understand what has led you to where you stand now. I will follow your blog from now on and know that you have friend here in Brazil!
