Back to the old routine

Have I ever mentioned how I hate routine?! The holidays are a wonderful doer-away with everything that is repetitive. No after school clubs, no extra activities, get up any time, eat when you're hungry. Perfect! However, once everyone is back to school, off we go again, back onto that hamster wheel of life, endlessly trudging around, and at times almost disappearing up our own backsides!

Could it be different? Could we have fun instead? Could we perhaps have breakfast before a shower on a school day?! Oh joy! Would it be too risky? Don't get me wrong, the routine works beautifully, the shower routine ensures all get washed and clean, in perfect bathroom harmony. The breakfast that follows, is quick, easy and functional. We all get to where we should be on time. But it is so boring and predictable, cheerless and not any fun! And that's just the mornings!

Boooo to the hamster wheel! Yay to throwing it all up in the air and seeing where it lands!

If only I were made that way!

  1. We are such creatures of habit! I often find on work mornings that if I get distracted at any point in the routine it all falls apart - and I leave for work with no breakfast, forgotten lunch, or worse - NO MAKE UP!!!
I truly appreciate that I have a later start two mornings a week - as I work later some days, but it means no alarm to set - I can mix up the routine... sure it is what has kept me sane!
Be daring - make the kids shower at night... free up time to vary it each day.

  2. Oh me too, thats why I love school holidays. Plus I'm 'on duty' seven days a week during term time so get absolutely exhausted & I hate going to bed early.
I wonder what we can do to change the monotony of it all? :0/

  3. I so agree....I hate getting back to that military routine of mornings. Yuk.

I have just noticed we have the exact same number of followers. Weird. Lx

  4. I think we are creatures of habit in this house & everything seems to run in a pattern of routine...... because the people who live here seem to like it!
Every now & then I BREAK OUT of it and everyone gets confused!
School is pretty much routine though.
Two inset days this week. Why couldn't they have tucked them onto the end of the holiday last week? Thats what I want to know!

  5. Making the smallest variation in your day can make the daily grind seem like less of a rut. Any little change can stir things up and break the monotony. Go for it.

  6. Hear hear! Trouble is, with kids, you need that routine to ensure everything that needs to get done gets done. It's just a shame that it sucks all the joy out of life in the process. Every now and then it's good to buck the routine and try something different.

  8. I have to be boring and say that school days aren't the days to break with routine!

But then I'm the woman who gets confused if she goes to the toilet before cleaning her teeth at bedtime!

  9. But surely the point of routine is to take the mental effort out of the repetitive, everyday functions and free up your imagination for the really interesting, fun things? If I can get through my breakfast in ten minutes, there's lots more time for blogging!

    Love the picture!!

  10. I'm not a fan of routine but am kind of craving some at the moment!! I've had no routine at all for so long that I'm kind of looking forward to the time when I do....(Will probably regret saying that!!)

  11. My husband and I work from home. Our trouble is that we have no routiine! We are exceptionally lucky that he works part time because he has such an interesting job investigating deaths in prison and he gets paid well for that. But without routine your day can simply slip away from you and you feel that you have achieved nothing worthwhile at the end of the day. I guess that it is simply too much of a good thing isn't so great when you get it! On the other hand, too much routine is too regimented and you feel controlled by forces outside of your control. I think the suggestion of having the kids shower at night is a great one - gives you more time to lie in or at least have a more relaxed morning routine. Balance, that's the key!

  13. I must admit that without routine, my house would fall apart and the kids would probably be dragged off by the Social Services people, but it is all SO boring isn't it?

  14. Sweetie, just wanted to say Hi. Sorry I've been Off.

I hate to say this but in the inertia of August, I yearned for the old routine.

Cute picture. Is that Your Hamster? xxx

  15. I used to daydream when I drove my kids to yet another ballgame or other activity. I would get on the interstate and see a sign for a city 100 or more miles away and would think, what if I just ran away? I would drive to that far away city and just do whatever I felt like doing. Needless to say, this hamster only dreamed and never got off the wheel:)

  16. Good analogy. I certain feel like I'm trapped on a hamster wheel at the moment!

  17. I dislike routine but feel better when I stick to one. We have such an erratic life with the business that some stable systems and structures are a great help.
I have to say, I have many trials and tribulations in my life but it is never boring! Sometimes I think it needs to be a bit moreso.
