We sat in the sun with cups of tea to exchange news. They had had visitors through the summer, a friend and her new partner and they were eager to tell me all about it.
'He was German, you know' said my Step Father who had taken an obvious dislike to the poor man. 'It's a shame The War's over' he pronounced.
I looked at him slightly puzzled
'Else I could have shot him!' he finished with a flourish, satisfied at just the thought...
Good Heavens! What a sweeping statement!
ReplyDeleteHaving Japanese connections, I also am used to hearing similar comments..... usually from older people!
Glad you had a lovely time with your mother! I expect she cherished you being there too. Pity you had to tolerate the other half though and hope you had masses of time on your own with just your mum.

ReplyDeleteIt saddens when I hear things like that expressed from older generations.
ReplyDeleteYes Maggie, but he is 80 and it was said with a little bit of ' Tongue in cheek' really, yet still unacceptable!
ReplyDeleteGoodness, a man of rather extreme views. What's he got against the Germans exactly? I hope he isn't constantly making snide remarks to the friend about her dubious partner....
ReplyDeleteDont mention the germans.
ReplyDelete... er... keep him away from the pope on is upcoming visit is the only advice I have
ReplyDeleteThat's the sort of thing my hubby's stepfather comes out with. He's 92 and was injured twice during the war so we forgive him.
ReplyDeleteFrom what you've said before about him I'm not surprised.
