Baa Humbug

World Book Day, how I hate it! Now I know that does sound a bit Baa Humbug but dressing up is not my thing, well not 'that' sort of dressing up anyway!

Most adults at work just go ahead and hire dresses from the local costume hire shop, which is OK if you have loads of spare cash to splash (baa humbug) but it's only school and I'm only there for half a dressing up day.

The theme is 'fairy tale characters', I decide to go as Dick Whittington's cat, easy; dress in black, put on my boots, dig out Small Sprogs monkey tail (not a surprise that he has one of those really is it?!) and make some ears. I made the ears. I looked like a panda with them on, they really weren't the right shape. Bum. I went to the local costume hire shop.

"Do you have cat ears?" I ask unenthusiastically. The shop assistant shows me a pair for £4.50 that come with a tail and a bow tie. A bow tie? I see... 'that' sort of a cat.
"Or these are £6" She muses showing me a pair of black ears with provocative 'tufts' of white. I settle for the pack of three and go home.

Later on my Significant Other notices the bag lying on the bed. "Ah, cat ears?" He says with a twinkle in his eye.
"Yep" I answer begrudgingly "With a tail and bow tie"
His eyes brighten.
"Obviously I won't be wearing the bow tie to school"
He looks crestfallen.
"Maybe another day?" He looks hopeful!

He may wait sometime, the baa humbug is still in me!

  1. Not sure I get the whole bit, but, well, whatever works for you.

Dressing up for a half day of something which sounds Bearly borderline interesting — bah, humbug. Indeed.

  2. I can't bear the fact that I have to find a costume for daughter, at least I don't have to do one myself. Bah humbug indeed!

  3. Very funny. My girlfriend works in an infants school and she moaning about this last week. She has the same theory as you.

  5. That was really funny!
I hate it when the granddaughters tell me they have to go dressed as such & such a character and only give me a days notice. Some of it is easy to make if you have the time and resources.I need at least a week!

  7. I've no idea if World Book Day is celebrated in NI schools. But there are three schools in the immediate vicinity and I didn't notice anyone in monkey tails, cat ears or bow ties. Didn't see anything in the media either....

I was once in Barcelona for WBD and that was great fun. Everyone wandering around with intriguing books and red roses....

  8. Mrs F hated Roman day in year 3 - then 40s evacuation day in year 6... So I know where you are on this - all this unpaid effort etc.

  9. I really really hope this idea is not introduced to Ireland - here we just get these useless little vouchers for books my kids don't want....

  10. Well, at least it sounds like you'll get to wear your costume more than once:)

We didn't have a day like this where teachers had to dress up, but on dress-up days for students I sometimes participated. Once I dressed up as Hester Prynne from "The Scarlet Letter" and another time as one of the witches from Macbeth. I think some of my students thought the latter costume was quite appropriate for me:)

  11. World Book Day is tricky for parents - especially as we only ever seem to get about 18 hours notice. Glad to hear you met up with Maggie!
