"Can you just look after.... while I take .....to ......?"
- Or the doorbell donging every few minutes -
"Can ... play?"
"Why don't you just come and join in?!" Children just kept coming or going, or so it seemed!
It has been totally manic and there is very little food left in the house! Two batches of home made cakes have been devoured, two loaves of home made bread, along with several pizzas, hot dogs and garlic bread, not to mention packets of biscuits! It has rained almost constantly, therefore they have played indoors most of the time, though 5 of them put up a tent in the garden today and ate lunch there, in the rain!
Although there was loads of mess to clear up on both days, it has been great fun. They are old enough to entertain themselves now and they arrive with nice mummy's who stay and keep me company and drink tea. This is how the school holidays should be! The children mill about, get out arty stuff, play out when it's dry, make dens in the rain, then drag in mud and bits of grass! But it all clears up at the end of the day! Mummy's sit about and ponder life. Obviously we never eat the cake or devour the pizza!
The company of good friends, both the children's and mine, one of life's simple pleasures. A great way to finish the school holidays.
Counting my many blessings.......

Sounds pretty perfect to me too. Glad you've had a nice end to the holidays. x
That sounds perfect, mummies talking and children playing. And how enterprising to defy the rain by putting up a tent! Partly I'm sure to safeguard the cake and pizza and prevent greedy mummies from hogging it.
Glad you are ending the summer holidays on a high, in the company of like mummys with lovely kids. I wish I lived round the corner and could pop by, you home made bread and cakes sound very alluring.
Hulla, that is because you are on a diet!!! But yes, it would be lovely to have your company too.
Nick, too true I'd say!
Sounds like a brilliant end to the school holidays. It doesn't seem long ago TG was getting ready for the 'Big School'.
Hope all goes well with TG & SS returning to school.
School tomorrow!
I am glad you enjoyed your holiday. Sounds just the type of holiday I used to have when the kids were young.
My granddaughter minding is about to start! My life is all or nothing!
Starnitesky, I was just thinking that this week. This time last year we were all nerves. Time passes so quickly. Nor did I imagine this time last year, how my life would be so different. Just goes to show really......
Maggie, hope tomorrow goes OK for you. Inset I presume? Back to reality and the drudgery of routine!!
Sounds lovely! (I remember summer! We have been back at school here for ages...looking forward already to half-term!)
Hello again Suburbia. Have been catching up on weeks&weeks of your news ... am so glad today was a happy one! Sounds cosy & fun; could almost smell the cakes baking. Thank you for sharing your 'Letter from the past' ... was really moved by your words ... and I can sooo relate to your emotions re. children being away on hols/children(and husband) returnng home etc. Such a complex cocktail of emotions isn't it? Hope tomorrow is another happy day.
I remember summer days like that when I was a kid....there always seemed to be loads of kids round our house and lots of yummy things to eat!! Thank you for bringing back those happy memories...not thought of that in years :-)
Glad you had a good end to the holidays

Sounds like school holidays always used to be for me, until weeks of camps and playschemes and activities all started taking over... You created a little holiday idyll there!
A house filled with the laughter of children and the company of good friends...it doesn't get much better than this. Your sign-off line says it all.
What a great end to the holidays!
Wow. I feel like putting on my old school shorts and dropping by myself. You did say homemade cakes, didn't you?
Sounds just right to me - the company of friends of all ages is one of my favourite things. Good luck for the new academic year. x
I remember those days fondly when my kids were in school and I would visit with other moms and all the kids would spend time together. Happy days!!
Sorry Steve your too late, the cupboards are bare!
Thanks Kitty, and to you:)
What a very perfect moment, in all its mess and confusion and clatter.
That's just how I and Hulla want our home to be (our proper bought home - we're just starting to have a sniff around!). We have a play-date today. They bring a fresh energy into our house.
Well done you for creating and maintaining such a lovely space with all that's gone on for you.
Sounds really perfect and a lovely end to the holidays. Seems like we've been back forever already ...
