Out with the girls

I am excited, I don't see them so much now our children are all at senior school. I light candles the night before and set about writing Christmas cards for them all. I 'Facebook' Ruth and she apparently already has her Christmas tree up, so I tell her I am taking cards to our meal out and that if she does too it might discourage the others from groaning when I produce them with a flourish!

We sit in the restaurant. They groan as predicted. I watch them all and feel slightly removed. They are bogged down with domesticity, they moan about their husbands. They have become 'middle aged'.

This is the first year that we have not all come together and thrown a Christmas party for all our children. I feel sad at the loss but they seem to be pleased not to have to spend the afternoon with their own offspring. At least we have got ourselves together I think.

We chat for hours, and perhaps predictably, I am the one who is most likely to tell a 'rude' joke or a risky story and then think perhaps I should 'modify' my behaviour. I am beginning to feel that I have moved on, I am enjoying my life, my children, my own world.

As we leave I wonder finally if this is the last time we will all get together in the last few days of November. We have thrown a children's party for 14 years and now this. Good things come to an end, perhaps I shouldn't hold on to them for so long. The page has turned, so much more to look forward to.

The "new mothers" group Mrs F joined at the local health centre 21 years ago has lost some members along the way and added one more but there are 6 of them still going strong... they now call themselves "the pasta girls" after the most likely meal they cook if and when they descend on one or others houses... although now with grown kids, grumpy husbands (I guess I'm in that camp) or new partners who thought they'd "left all that behind" etc. they now normally head for the pub for a meal ... although in a new first they are having a "sleep over" in a couple of weeks time ... they seem to regressing to what the kids were doing a few years ago!!!

I think things run their course sometimes and just fizzle out or change.
You have reminded me. I must get my Christmas cards done!

"They are bogged down with domesticity, they moan about their husbands. They have become middle aged." How sad. They need to do something to improve their lives rather than accepting such misery. Like you did in fact. You're obviously much happier than they are, and you've certainly moved on into a different place.

It's very easy to become middle-aged I think. I see it all round here where I and my family must look like Dr Who rejects with our funny car, wheelchair, flappy handed aspie, colourful teen and a mum who has not quite worked out what a 49 yr old is supposed to wear...

Hmmm, I think sometimes things just come to an end...you look at a group and think 'I'm not sure I fit in here anymore' because your life has changed and their life has stayed the same. It's sad but there will be new groups...

Change is constant, so there is always more to look forward to. How nice that you got to enjoy the visit this time. It doesn't matter if there is a next time; this is the time that counts, keep it tucked in your pocket with a smile, and keep turning pages as you are doing.

;D

XOXO
