Forever (Fictional)

Forever he'd said.

She thought about the word. Mostly she tried hard not to use it but this was due to experience rather than devotion. Forever, she thought, is like a slippery fish, the brave one who tries to escape the fish bowl but lands up hitting the lino. The one that you try to scoop up with the fish slice just before its' last gasp and then realise - once it's back in the water - that you've managed to leave its left fin stuck to the floor and now it can only swim around in bloody circles. That's what forever is like; you look at it swimming around in circles and wonder if you'd have been better off just walloping it over the head with the handle of the fish slice and putting it out of its misery!

That had been her experience of forever. Not to say that it hadn't been very real to start with. No, it had really felt like it would be forever but it had got damaged somehow, lost its way and finally someone had had to put it out of its misery. Who was brave enough to hit the fish over the head? The final blow; 'I'm leaving you'... It seemed a such a long time ago now.

Sad story, but remarkably well written. Striking imagery (and not just the fish striking the floor). The swimming in circles is well pictured, but so melancholy.

Anyhow, when is your book due to come out? (With writing like that, you must have a book, don't you?)

Blessings and Bear hugs!

A prose poem... succint, emotive and to the point.

Yes, forever is a dangerous word. We like to think things will last forever but you can never tell what real-life screw-ups will intervene. I like the image of the fin-less fish, very appropriate. I think I've left my left fin in plenty of places....

That really was beautifully written and I did like the fishy comparison.
Forever can be comforting....... but is it realistic today? I hope so.

Forever fish swimming round and round does not sound great, perhaps sometimes things work out better when they are not forever xx ps there's something for you - if you want - over at mine.

Great comparison. But I did feel sorry for the fish!

Oops, deleted this one instead of publishing so copied it from email. Sorry Flowerpot!

Flowerpot has left a new comment on your post "Forever (Fictional)":

Forever has different meanings in life I find. My husband said he would love me forever, which I'm sure he does - he just didnt know that death would arrive so quickly. Great blog, Suburbia - good to meet you please come back!
