October already

I've had a lot of time at home recently and I've been so lucky that, until this week, the weather's been beautiful. And then today, again, the rain stopped and I got out into the garden to do the rest of the jobs that were on my to do list - things to keep myself busy.

It's been wonderful to have this time. I am trying hard to practise gratefulness and live in the moment. So today, after 'chopping' some things in the garden, I took some time to sit down with a mug of tea and a magazine outside in the sun. In the shade it was chilly but the sun still has some strength and I basked in its rays. In the field, behind the house, I can hear the starlings; they gather this time of year after feasting on the Rowan berries and sit in groups and on the electric wires and 'chirrup' softly. It's a beautiful noise, gentle and low, like they're whispering 'sweet nothings' to each other. I remember the noise from childhood, I can't remember where I would have been, maybe my granny's garden, but it sooths me and makes me grateful to be alive.

I sit for a while and listen to their music. I drink the cold water that I have as well as my tea, it tastes cold and clean and fresh and I am so very grateful to be drinking it now, when it's hot and I have the head space to appreciate it.

I am keeping busy but time has slowed a little. I'm trying to make the most of it and be thankful. It seems to be working.

We have two rowans that are two years old and haven't produced any berries yet. Apparently they can be five to six years old before they get berries.

I like sitting and listening to birds too. At this time of year there are often massive murmurations of starlings over the river Lagan - hundreds and hundreds of them all perfectly coordinated. An amazing sight.

It was a lovely day today and we had a flock of sparrows feeding on the feeders on & off. I did a small amount of weeding and cutting back shrubs.
I also did masses of shredding up of old documents and I thought I'd killed the shredder by over working it....... but it did recover after a while.
There's something immensely satisfying in clearing up the muddles, isn't there?

Taking time to be thankful! That is awesome. A lady of leisure. Not working any more? Hmmmm.

Starlings are an "introduced species" here (from England) with no natural predators. So they tend to overwhelm us, especially in cities. I had one as a pet, until it grew up.

Life is going well in the land of the Bears. Cool days, with bright sun. And sub-zero temperatures at night. Perfect for getting ready for hibernation.

Blessings and Bear hugs, "Mom."

I am exceedingly bad at just stopping and taking time to appreciate everything, well done that you can, and it sounds like a perfect day for it x

Everyone needs some down time. There is nothing better than sitting outside listening to the birds and taking in everything around you to refresh the spirit.

What a beautiful relaxing moment in the garden. I too love birdsong especially in the morning when the rest of the world is silent
