Another Brick in the Wall

Poor Small Sprog has been traumatised by his cookery teacher (I know it's called Food Technology these days but hey, it's still cooking to me!) It sounds stupid doesn't it? But really, he was a complete mess before half term at the thought of having to face her. He says he feels threatened by her. He says when he asks her a question she barks at him. Listening to other things he has said she sounds like she has a screw loose...

Now I remember, back in the '70's when I was at school, regularly being in class with teachers that would throw blackboard rubbers at us (do you remember those? It's all white boards and 'smart boards' now) and I vividly remember watching my Geography teacher hold a boy by his throat up against the classroom wall on one occasion. Yes, I was a child of the '70's where there was still talk of the cane and you were scared of most of your teachers! But haven't we moved on a little since then?

Tall Girl had the same teacher that Small Sprog is complaining about but some years ago. She complained to me too but played it safe in the classroom and - as she is was somewhat of a shrinking violet back then, managed to 'disappear' in the classroom environment and never get noticed by the vicious creature.

"How old is she?" I asked Tall Girl -asking Small Sprog for that sort of information is particularly unreliable.
"Old" she states. I think of nearing retirement, 'old school' a woman that threw backboard rubbers back in the '70's and would still do so if there were such things in schools now.
"Nearing 65?" I ask her
"Nearer 50" She replies as I raise and eyebrow at her and she realises I'm not a million miles from that myself (though I am working hard on reversing the years these days)!
"No excuse then" I mutter, realising that there is no excuse whatsoever, in any circumstances, for threatening behaviour in the classroom.

I remember at five years old having a large bunch of metal keys thrown at me for yawning. They whizzed past my head. I could have had an eye taken out.I felt very traumatised as I was a quiet child.

Poor SS...... hope he managed OK with that horrid cookery teacher.

You had better watch out.... now that you are getting so elderly!!!!!

Really sounds an old school one. Yes, we took those sort for granted in the '70s.

Hope it gets sorted out. Rotten when your poor boy feels intimidated like that xxx

Bullying and intimidating teachers can have a very damaging effect on their pupils. Perhaps he could transfer to another teacher? Or is it just a matter of him toughening up a bit? But boys shouldn't have to "toughen up", that's how emotional repression starts....

I remember a hideous French teacher who, unfortunately, I also got for German being very like that. You were damned if you put your hand up and damned if you didn't! She made my life hell and my grades slipped terribly I went from an A student in both classes to barely scraping a C. She was horrible! *hugs* to Small Boy...hopefully he won't have her too long!

If both your children are of the same opinion about this particular teacher then it's unlikely that it's a clash of personalities. Perhaps a word with your son's Head Of Year about the 'cookery' teacher wouldn't go amiss? There's is no excuse for a teacher to be intimidating to students these days. x

Yes I remember those days - we had some teachers who should have been in some Olympic team as they could turn, aim and throw with unbelievable speed, agility and accuracy. Wasted as teachers!

I also remember once doing something wrong in metalwork - I honestly can't remember what but the teacher hit me on the head with a rubber mallet in front of the whole class and called me "a spastic"... The level of hurt that they can do is incredible - I mean that is nearly 40 years ago but I still remember it vividly.

Sounds like you'd have to hope that she will be retiring soon :( I can still remember "hating" some of my teachers who picked on me. No violence, but I was regularly accused of doing things that I hadn't done and then lying about it. The injustice still upsets me now!

I remember those days! Scary. If she's traumatising SS who seems to be a sensible and mature young man then she definitely needs addressing!
