The Dentist

I'm off to the dentist tomorrow. I hate the dentist. I have to have a filling (I'm sure she made the hole when she was poking about with that scratchy thing last week). Every time I think about having to go I feel a bit sick (what a baby I hear you say) and I get a sort of 'school tummy'!

What I hate the most is having to sit there for, what seems like, ages with my mouth unnaturally wide open! And then there's all the equipment that they try to store in your mouth at the same time as drilling the tooth! Loads of metal stuff, drilling and sucking and.....I'm feeling a bit faint now. I need to go for a lye down!

Then there's the packing stuff that they put in the hole. It squeaks like cotton wool when you chew on it (not that I do chew on cotton wool often, you understand!) but it's one of those 'fingernails down the blackboard' noises isn't it?

And, after all the build up of stress (weeks of it you understand!) and the pain, needles, drills, squeaking, and the indignity of spitting with a numb mouth which inevitably means you dribble, all that and then they give you a bloody bill!

So as you can see I'm in for a sleepless night full of terrible chills and horrible thoughts. If I do sleep I shall be awake with the lark, feeling sick (that's about how every morning starts for Tall Girl at the moment, so it could add to my empathy level) and not want any breakfast. I shall probably need some 'Rescue Remedy' at about 8am and then again at regular intervals. Perhaps a whole bottle full by 9.15, which is when my appointment is! Have you ever tried it? It's just like brandy, no wonder it works!

Anyway, I'm feeling much better now I've offloaded! And I guess I could just ring up in the morning and rearrange the appointment?!!!

FOR THE LAST 16 YEARS I'VE TAKEN THE KIDS WITH ME TO AL MY ooops sorry..

appointments...cos it made be brave and less afraid, on the outside anyhow! SO I kinda grew to be fearless about the whole deal, so the kids would be brave themselves when they started needed fillings...think it worked as neither of them have had any major filings etc, until my son had train track braces fitted 18 months ago...again he says its painless, just aches a bit now and then...so I like to think l've done my bit to help in in the long run..though he'll never know it of course, just one of thosemum things l guess!

Oooh! Commiserations!

The last time I went to the dental hospital, the student hygienist was trying to get ME to work the sucky thing! Hopeless or what?!

Some dental nurses are absolutely useless with the sucky thing. Have you noticed? Others are very efficient.

Hope you get on OK tomorrow. I do feel for tall girl. Hope things settle down.

I am one of the worst, I hate the dentist too (not personally, you understand!) I find that it helps to take large slow breaths during treatment, and when they are fiddling in your mouth and its uncomfortable, make a conscious effort to wiggle your toes. It really does help. Rescue remedy is great stuff ain't it?

Just get it over with, cos if you rearrange it you will be on tenterhooks waiting for it to come around again.

Good luck.

Well, geez! Now I'm all anxious and I'm not even the one going to the dentist!!

My last visit--a while ago--was so traumatic. It gives me the chills just to think about it. Emergency yanking of one of my wisdom teeth--then he asks if I want him to just go ahead and take the top ones out--since he was already in the neighborhood. No. Get this stuff out of my mouth and let me go home where I can curl up in the fetal position in the corner of my closet!

So, anyway. Best of luck! :D

Oh, Suburbia, I do feel your pain! My dentist is so nice that I feel bad when I say I hate going to his office, but he understands. My mouth is worth a fortune with all the dental work I've had (but at least they're all still my teeth:)). I used to use Lamaze breathing techniques to get me through the whole thing.
What is "Rescue Remedy"? Brandy I know:)

I should buy shares in Rescue Remedy - we get through loads of the stuff!

Good luck for today - I'll be thinking of you. x

My dentist happens to be a personal friend. Believe me, that makes it harder.

Yes, writing down your fears may have been good therapy. I hope it went well today.

What I hate most is when they seem to squeeze as much money as they can out of you (NHS dentists are rare around here). That and the Vets are the worst.

Have you seen that Dentist on Armstrong and Miller? Hope he's not like that!

Hope you're recovering ok. xxx

Hi Mean mom and thankyou for your commiserations

Suzysoo, I went fully prepared to follow your advice. However it was completly fine. No pain and very quick. Thanks for your sympathy though!

Dori, that sounds nasty! Sometimes a darkened room is the only place to be!!

Hi Rose, I haven't heard of that breathing technique but Suzysoo had told me to take deap breaths so I was well prepared!
Rescue remedy is a Bach flower remedy made from a dilution of flower extracts :rock rose, impatiens, clematis, star of Bethlehem and cherry plum, all in a grape alcohol solution (that's the best bit!). People use it before flying, exams or after accidents to clam the nerves. It works for me and was essential when I took my final exam for my degree but whether it is just the placebo affect I have no idea!

Kitty, thanks :)

Saz, so kind of you to come back and say that, thank you :)

Can bass 1 does that mean you have to act all grown up and brave then?!

Jenny I totally agree. It was my filling or have the rabbits pedicured this week!! What a choice. No NHS dentists here either and the vet is even more expensive.

I posted about the very same thing last week. Was delightedly informed by the dentist that I'll have to have a crown - £400 thanks very much. Crikey! Hope your visit was ok.

OOOOOH! It makes me feel uneasy after reading this. Maybe it won't be as bad as you think!
Can't be as bad as having a baby can it! Wrong end, I know!

Go and get it over with. I hate the dentist too but at least I am going reglarly so as not not have a mouth full of rotting teeth. I posted awhile back about how many fillings I needed when I went after not going for 7 years. Ick! I hope all goes well.

OMG! You just described the ordeal so brilliantly that I got "school tummy" and shallow breathing...I come by way of David...congrats on the POTD mention!

I am trying desperately to hang on to the last of my teeth. They are filled, filed, jacketed, bridged, and missing. I will do anything, you hear? ANYTHING, to avoid the dreaded denture.

Breathe deeply and slowly, write posts in your head but do it...choppers are the alternative.

I hate the dentist too! I hope it went well. Even though I haven't been hurt by one for years I still have a sense of glom hannging over me when I know I have an appointment coming up.

And they talk to you! Just when your mouth is full!

I'll have to try some Rescue Remedy.

I appreciate all that you said ...and you clearly articulated how the stuff sounds! but I don't mind it all that much because I think I would hate false teeth more!!!

Couldn't agree more, a place to be avoided at all costs. I'm a terrible weed too, good luck!
