Weekend stuff

On Saturday I had 2 mornings, as if getting out of bed just once isn't bad enough!!! I'm not great in the morning.

I was awake at 3am to take my SO to the airport and then returned home to bed, being woken the second time by a Small Sprog with and a roaring dinosaur! He often brings his Nintendo into bed in the morning. Getting up the second time in one day wasn't any easier than the first.

This morning the children and I are all in my room again, on various electronic devices. I can't think where they get that from!

Small Sprog is creating a virtual creature to do battle with, I am here, obviously, on my laptop and Tall Girl is playing truly awful music on her new phone, which apparently is the best thing in the world........

Yesterday we went to Tesco to get her a new phone. Before we get there she tells me how she likes a particular phone that all her friends have, but that it seems to break easily. So when we get to the 'phone dept', she points to the said phone and says that is the one she wants.
'You must be joking' I say as she throws a pout my way 'You said it is hopeless, and just look at the price!'
The pout gets more pronounced. If she had been two years old she'd be lying on the floor kicking and screaming!
'Have a look at the others, there must be another one that you like?'
Obviously there wasn't, not one! Why on earth didn't I delegate this job to her father?
I tried to point out that she has just had a birthday and Christmas and a laptop in September and the fact that her existing phone has just decided to die, didn't mean she could have a top of the range phone, just for nothing. End of lecture! The pout continued.
'Well, you'll just have to make do with your old one until it completely gives up' I say determinedly, beginning to walk away.
I noticed a moment of panic in her eyes. I had found her weak spot!

To cut a long story short, we found a medium priced phone that she deemed acceptable. By the time we arrived back to the car she was beaming with excitement! She tore open the box, loaded her Sim and memory card and before we were out of the car park, she was oohing and ahhhing about all its various attributes. It was 'The Best Phone In The World'. Damn I thought, I could have got away with an even cheaper version!

I am so dreading daughter wanting a mobile phone (hopefully not for a few years yet). I'm hoping to try the "you go to school with me, I'm there all day and you come home with me, so you don't need one" tack. It'll never work, will it?

I could do with a new phone myself but the budget won't stetch that far at the moment... when it does it certainly won't be anything of the calibre of an iPhone. It'll be the cheapest model I can get away with. I don't need games. I don't need internet. I don't need apps. I just need a phone!

So glad tall girl liked her phone!

I have got to the age when my children give ME
the gadgets
the kindle
the iphone
and they gave Robert and me a flat screen TV for Xmas.......
I think I was fairly happy in the days we wrote letters

but I adore e-mail

Teenagers can't live without their phones today, and of course they need something that does much more than just take calls:) I can't even work my daughter's phone. Mine is very basic, but I had to have my grandson show me how to take pictures with it:)

I think retail emporiums lost out the day I decided not to have kids. I would be the most indulgent mother ever and would probably bankrupt myself buying all sorts of stuff - no doubt wanted more by me than by this mythical offspring

You did well to beat her down.

Glad you didn't weaken. All the other girls will be telling their mums that Tall Girl has the very best phone & that they simply MUST have one.

Nuts in May

Funny how the exorbitant must-haves suddenly cease to be must-haves when a more sensible reality is imposed. You handled the situation pretty well, I think.

Personally I have a rock-bottom-of-the-range mobile which does nothing except phone calls and texts and cost me £20. I only use it when I'm mountain climbing or Jenny's over in England.

bless her. As you say-teenagers. I have a fourteen year old with an imminent birthday gasping for an Iphone..........

Hi Jo, I am gasping for an iPhone, and if I'm not having one, than she is definitely not having one either!!

Working Mum, you can run but you can't hide! You'll never get away with that line!

Nick and Steve, I was lucky enough to have my last two phones donated to me as second hand ones! I can't live without one though. I will always dream of an iPhone! :)

We got the Queenager an I-Phone for Xmas as she has always operated on other people's old phones (including our neighbour's), and it was THE only thing she got. She promptly lost her I-pod - that we were going to give my mother!!! The very next day. If she loses this I-Phone I swear I won't be responsible....

That sounds far too familiar!!!!

Our daughter has spent a fortune on phones, the two expensive ones both have been broken in hardly no time! Now she has my wifes old one and that is still going strong - she hides it from her friends I think but tough!
