Slugs and snails..........

Husband has grown these! Lots of them, they smell wonderful and there was no need of a greenhouse! Another good thing about them is that the slugs and snails don't seem to eat them.

As I was wandering up the garden today, (wondering if I had missed summer altogether in a blink of and eye) I remembered something Small Sprog had said about a caterpillar when he was small. He was innocent then! There was no rudeness or 'toilet' talk about him. It seems an age ago.

He has always been fascinated with bugs of all kinds. One summers afternoon in the garden, he called me over to observe a rather beautiful caterpillar which had caught his eye. It was a bright hairy one, which looked much the same all over with no obvious 'front' and 'back'. We watched for a while and the caterpillar did what caterpillar's do best. It munched its way through leaf after leaf of on of the garden plants. Small Sprog looked on in wonder. Inevitably what goes in, must come out, and the caterpillar produced a large 'dropping' out of it's back end.

"Oh mummy!" Shouted Small Sprog alarmed

"What's the matter?" I asked, worried he'd been stung or something.

"Poor thing" he went on " It's nose has just fallen off!"
"No! I giggled "That's his bottom end!"

Bless him! If it happened now he'd be in 'fits' and shouting toiletish words at the top of his voice. What a difference a few years make.

Your son always makes me smile. :) What kind of flowers are those? We don't have any scented ones and we need them.

Mmmmmm ... sweet peas. I love them! What a clever husband.

So glad Tall Girl is happy with her school for next year. We did the new uniform thing for No.1 too - black, black and more black! She's going to be funerial for the next 5 or 7 years! x

Awesome Small Sprog story. I love "little kid" stories like that.

My dad could grow sweet peas. I tried for years - with no luck!

When I was a child, there was a popular TV show called "Kids Say the Darndest Things." Small Sprog would have been a hit on it. He would probably be offended today if I said he was precious, but his observation was just precious.

By the way, in case you didn't read my reply to your comment, I think we passed each other flying through cyberspace this morning (or afternoon there). I would have waved if I'd known.

This post for some crazy reason brought back a long-forgotten childhood memory of mine. I grew up near the Olympic Rain Forest in Washington State and one thing we were 'blessed' with was these HUGE greenish-brown...well, actually about the color of baby diarrhea...SLUGS. They'd come out in droves after particularly heavy rains. We kids used to run for the salt shakers and go out and sprinkle them to watch them curl up and die. We used to love to sleep outside on summer evenings and we'd wake up to find silvery slug trails all over the tops of our sleeping bags. If I'd ever awakened with one of those vulgar things on ME, I think I would've died, haha!

No sweet peas in my garden this year. I didn't get around to doing any which is a shame as I really do like them and their lovely aroma wafting around the place. What kids say can be so, so funny. At least he wasn't chopping worms in half! x

Sub, I did my degree at Staffordshire University and had a house next to the Spode pottery factory. Three years of Staffordshire life gave me an interest in pottery that remains; to that end, whenever I pick up crockery, I always turn it over to see where it was made. Could you tell us about your rather pretty jug and its heritage, please?

Thank you!

Maggie, yes We have a house full now. Getting hard to breath!

GWTM, I thought you may like that one as you have had a fair bit of poo at your place recently ;)

Hi Louise, he has attempted that. I wish I could post you some sweetpeas, they are getting out of control.

Welcome Caroline, please call again :)

BS5 SEE MY COMMENT AT YOURS! However my jug (note no plural!) is recently made, not old at all, with no mark on its bottom. Misconstrue that if you will ;)
